‍Earlier in the month HMS Scott visited Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the last foreign port visit of the phenomenally successful 2022/2023 deployment.

The visit gave the opportunity for trips up to the top of Mount Teide, Spain’s highest peak at 3,715m, and the chance to sight some of the wildlife and archaeology of the island.

A day trip to Gran Canaria yielded excellent sighting of giant lizards, stone curlews and Cory’s Shearwaters. A video of some of these will be posted soon!

Today we want to explain to you how we are fighting pests of small rodents that we had last year in our garden.We had a small garden, and a plague of rats and mice was installed that watered almost all tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.This year, and with the experience of the previous, we wanted to look for an ecological, sustainable and evidently raticide-free solution, as we believe that using raticides in the field is a crime against all wildlife.

We installed a nest box for lettuce right above the garden, and the experience has been a success, they occupied and raised it, and throughout the season we have found only 1 red tomato, they have put enormous pressure on the population of small rodents within the farm.

Now, knowing the effectiveness of night predators and with the experience that has given us all this process, we have decided to install another (at a prudential distance from the lettuce), for the common rucksack, because in the face of the next year we want to expand the orchard on this side of the finca, and our good friend Lluís has given us this bee box, which we have modified and adapted as a nest for the backpack.We encourage everyone to create shelters or nests for nocturnal predators, it truly is very rewarding and enriching!
